Pressure Is Not the Enemy

January 20, 2026

Pressure is part of sport.

When athletes feel it, it shows that the moment matters to them.

Telling an athlete to “just relax” isn’t helpful.

Pressure does not need to disappear for performance to improve.

Emotional intelligence helps athletes recognize nerves without being controlled by them. They learn to stay grounded, focussed and composed while the pressure is present.

As one athlete shared, “ I still feel nervous. It just doesn’t take me out of the game any more”.

That is not the absence of pressure. That is emotional skill in action.

Pressure does not weaken athletes. Lack of regulation does.
